Land Of Aki Maragang
Where is this land? And who is Aki Maragang? Why am I interested in writing about this topic?
Perhaps many have heard about the Island of Borneo. Borneo is the third largest island in the world and the largest island in Asia (Wikipedia). Borneo is divided into four unequal parts. The largest is Kalimantan which is part of Indonesia. Sabah - formerly North Borneo - is found on the northernmost part whilst Sarawak and Brunei are on the north-western part of Borneo. Sabah and Sarawak are member nations of the Federation of Malaysia. The other remaining member is Malaya. Singapore had left the Federation in 1965
Aki Maragang land is found in North Borneo, now Sabah. North Borneo was a nation ruled by the British North Borneo Chartered Company. It was conquered and ruled for a while by the Japanese before it became a colony of the United Kingdom. This is Aki Maragang's land.
"Aki" in the Kadazan Language is great male ancestor. Maragang is the name of the earliest known ancestor of the Kadazan and Dusun people. More will be said later on how the word "Dusun" name came about.
Maragang and his family of three sons and one daughter lived at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Southeast Asia. It is said that his children migrated to different part of North Borneo. There are more than thirty tribes which are said to be the descendants of Maragang.
Why am I blogging about Maragang and the land of his descendants? Many believed, the eldest son, Runsud, went northwards to the land around Kudat. The descendants of the second son, Rongguvai, peopled the interior, the land to the east and as far away as Lahad Datu. Tomui, the third son, migrated to Penampang, then moved to Papar and then to Matunggung. Sayap, the only daughter, went to Kota Belud.
Based on this narrative, I have the blood of both Tomui and Rongguvai, on my father's and mother's family line respectively. Both of my father's parents were descended from Tomui whilst my mother's parents were descended from Rongguvai blood line.
This is the main reason why I am blogging about this matter.
